NGEi and Partners Lead the Charge Against Plastic Pollution on World Earth Day
In alignment with the global theme of "Planet vs Plastic," the Nigeria Green Earth Initiative (NGEi) spearheaded a collaborative effort to combat plastic pollution on World Earth Day 2024. Joined by esteemed partners such as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Edo State, Egor Local Government, LEAP Africa, Nigerian Youth Future Funds (NYFF), and the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, NGEi embarked on a multifaceted campaign to raise awareness and inspire action against the pervasive issue of plastic pollution.

Amidst the bustling atmosphere of Egor Community Markets in Edo State, NGEi and its partners conducted a series of interactive sensitization sessions. Mrs. Evelyn Ediagbonya, Head of Department for Environment in Egor Local Government, emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal practices and the planting of trees to mitigate climate change's adverse effects. Dr. Osayomwanbo Osarenotor lecturer at the Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology, University of Benin and NGEi member, enlightened participants on the far-reaching consequences of plastic waste, including its contribution to health ailments like breast cancer and its detrimental impact on marine ecosystems.
In addition to awareness-raising efforts, NGEi led sanitation exercises aimed at removing plastic litter from Egor Community Markets and surrounding areas. Volunteers, including NYSC Corp Members and local residents, demonstrated their commitment to environmental stewardship by actively participating in clean-up drives.
While World Earth Day serves as a catalyst for action, NGEi remains steadfast in its commitment to combatting plastic pollution and promoting environmental sustainability. The organization is actively engaged in initiatives such as establishing plastic collection centers in marketplaces and advocating for policy interventions to address plastic waste management comprehensively.
As NGEi and its partners reflect on the success of their World Earth Day campaign, they underscore the importance of sustained collective action in the fight against plastic pollution. By harnessing the momentum generated on World Earth Day, NGEi aims to mobilize broader support and catalyze transformative change in Nigeria's approach to plastic waste management.
In commemorating World Earth Day 2024, NGEi and its partners have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to protecting our planet and safeguarding the well-being of future generations. Through collaborative efforts and community engagement, they have laid the foundation for a cleaner, greener future. As we reflect on the significance of World Earth Day, let us heed the call to action and join forces in the ongoing battle against plastic pollution. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and pave the way for a more sustainable world.
